USING BODY-DEFINED FORM IN URBAN FURNITURE DESIGN 2/7

CONCEPTntroduction

In the built environment, our bodies seek physical relationships, objects and forms to which we can relate in instinctive, physical ways. Impressions, physical marks made by bodies, by people, are a kind of communication and create physical relationships in the instinctive, physical understandings of how they were made and what made them. In the design of urban furniture lies the possibility to create special, deliberate physical relationships between the form of the furniture and human bodies, and between human bodies.

This project investigates ways to integrate impressions of human bodies into urban furniture, creating body-defined form. By taking hold of the incidental, using real bodies and the postures they naturally take, this form-finding method results in impressions, shapes that are simultaneously new and unique, and very common and familiar.
