USING BODY-DEFINED FORM IN URBAN FURNITURE DESIGN 4/7

MATERIAL TESTING / WAX

After testing a variety of materials including lacquer, plaster, polyester, expandable polyurethane and fibreglass fabric with epoxy resin, a process using liquid sculpture wax emergedas the most effective way of taking and fixing a body-impression in a soft, fabric, responsive form or cushion. In a very fast and effective process, a cushion is coated in liquid wax, a thin plastic protective sheet is placed on top of the waxed cushion, and a body makes an impression. After 30 seconds holding a posture, the wax has solidified sufficiently for the body to stand up, and the plastic can be easily peeled away without shifting the impression. Using the simple and highly effective process of re-heating and re-melting the wax crust, the texture is recovered while the impression remains completely intact.
