USING BODY-DEFINED FORM IN URBAN FURNITURE DESIGN 5/7MATERIAL TESTING / OBSERVATIONS & EVALUATION
It was important to see how different materials responded to this process, to test
bou
different surface textures and different forms emerging from the process. Three materials of varying elasticity were selected to test:
1. Cotton-canvas | non-elastic (top): This material absorbs the liquid wax, fixes the body-impression, and retains the impression when the wax is reheated. Its original sewn volume remains subtle but perceptible after the impression has been taken.
2. Cotton-fleece | medium-elasticity (centre): This more substantive material has a higher absorption and takes more liquid wax into the form. It fixes and retains the body-impression when the wax is reheated. Because of its medium-elasticity, its original sewn-volume is more distorted and stretched after the weight of the body has made an impression.
3. Cotton-jersey | high-elasticity (bottom): This very stretchy textile fixes the body-impression but shrinks back when the wax is reheated and the body is not supporting the shape. It is too elastic to retain an accurate impression.
